Super Hans outlining his artistic philosophy. That is the whole manifesto. There is no second clause. The comedy is in the word "manifesto" doing an enormous amount of work for what is, on inspection, just a description of his week.

Mark, genuinely scandalised by a bread order. Nothing in the show captures him better — a man for whom another person's mild excess is a moral event, and who will absolutely say so out loud at a curry house.

"How thick is wall?"

Delivered with total seriousness and no definite article, which is what makes it. The missing "the" turns a practical question into something almost philosophical, and it has survived as a phrase you can deploy at any DIY situation for the rest of your life.

The daily routine reduced to its three essential stages. Bleak, accurate, and exactly the sort of thought the show specialised in — the internal monologue nobody would ever say aloud, which is precisely why we get to hear it.

"Is that normal pooing you're doing?"

A question asked through a bathroom door, in a flatshare where no boundary has ever been observed. The show's great subject is two men who know far too much about each other and cannot leave, and this is that subject in six words.

"Red next to black, step the fuck back. Red next to yella, cuddly fella."

A snake-identification rhyme, delivered as though it were common knowledge and the listener was foolish for not having it to hand. The confidence is the joke; the accuracy is beside the point.

"I've been initiated. I am a drug user! Fuck the police!"

The euphoria of a very sensible man having done something mildly transgressive for the first time, and immediately over-committing to it. Nobody in television does the specific comedy of a repressed person being briefly free quite like this.

"Clean shirt!"

Triumph, in two words, over an achievement so small it barely registers. Which is the actual point: the show's characters mark their tiny victories out loud because there is nothing larger coming.

Language collapsing entirely under the weight of a hangover. It should not scan and it does, and it has been shouted in kitchens by fans ever since.

Super Hans, Explained

A disproportionate number of the best lines belong to Super Hans, and the reason is structural. Mark and Jeremy are trapped in self-awareness — we hear their thoughts, so we watch them talk themselves out of things. Super Hans has no interior at all. He simply says the thing, immediately, with total confidence, and moves on.

That makes him the show's release valve. The cereal criticism, the manifesto, the snake rhyme — they land because there is no hesitation in front of them. Matt King plays him as a man permanently mid-thought and entirely unbothered by where the thought came from.

Why Peep Show Quotes Land Differently

Most sitcoms are quotable because of catchphrases. Peep Show is quotable because of point of view. The show is shot from inside the characters' eyes, with their thoughts on the soundtrack, so you hear the ugly private version before the socially acceptable one comes out of their mouth.

That gives the lines a peculiar quality: they are things you recognise from your own head. "Four naan, Jeremy?" is funny because everyone has silently judged an order. "Butter the toast, eat the toast, shit the toast" is funny because everyone has had that thought at about 7am and immediately suppressed it.
